Last evening [16-09-1880] a Sacred Concert was held in St Andrew's Church, Belfast, and was fairly attended. Those ladies and gentlemen who took part were members of the Episcopalian, Wesleyan, and Presbyterian Church Choirs, and who in a kind manner gave their services willingly. As each one did her and his part to the best of their abilities, it would be invidious on our part either to criticise or to single out individuals in order to bestow praise, but suffice it to say that it was decidedly the best entertainment of the kind ever produced in Belfast. Mr R.M.Heath acted as conductor, and also gave valuable assistance as a flautist. Miss Heath and Miss Best played the accompaniments in a most creditable manner. The principal object sought by those who undertook to carry out the concert was to put before the public sacred music, in order to show its beauties, and thus educate the mind to a liking for it. As far as we can learn in this they were successful, the solos and part music being rendered with much taste and feeling. The following program was carried through: - Duett (organ and flute), "March of the Israelites," Miss Heath and Mr Heath; anthem "I was glad when they said," Choir; song "Lord Remember David." Mr D. Mills; anthem, "The Lord Descended," Choir; solo, duett, trio, quartette, and chorus, "Adeste Fideles," Choir; song (with flute obligato), "He wipes the Tear" Miss A. Horsley; song, "Absolom," Mr R.M.Heath; anthem, "Hear My Cry Oh Lord," Choir; aria, "But Thou did'st not Leave," Miss Brown; anthem, "Serve the Lord with Joy," Choir. Interval. - Duett (organ and flute), "The Heavens are Telling," Miss Heath and Mr Heath; anthem, "Blessed are the People," Choir; song, "David Singing before Saul," Mr D Mills; song (with flute obligato), "Consider the Lillies," Miss Northway, anthem, "The Lord is my Shepherd," Choir; song "Angels ever Bright and Fair," Miss Brown; quartette, "Morning Prayer," Members Choir; anthem, "Come unto Me," Choir; song "Resignation," Mr R.M.Heath; song "Listening Angels," Miss Horsley; anthem, "Lord Dis___ss Us," Choir. Mr R.M.Heath, the conductor of the above concert, certainly deserves a word of praise, for without his musical knowledge and taste such a treat could not have been afforded to the public. It is only those who take an active part in carrying out musical entertainments on a large scale, who have any idea as to the amount of trouble and anxiety which has to be undergone. In this respect Mr Heath was successful, and with the assistance of his musical friends provided a concert of a high class. Those who were not present missed a treat.
