won entrance scholarship to "Central College" in Geelong
matriculated with honours, was dux
went for a time to be a "Roebuck Dentist" (whatever that is)
started studying for teaching - earned 1st and 2nd class teaching certificates
(1st class in 16 subjects, honours in most of those)
started studying Dentistry
did one year then made a break to earn money to continue.
was given charge of "model school" at Flinders
worked at various country schools
on staff at Caulfield Grammar school (Zoe had letters from headmaster)
intended going back to University but war broke out
torn between his family's pacificism (they were Plymouth Brethren) and
his desire to help his countrymen,
and enlisted 1915 in the 6th Brigade 23rd Battalion 6th Field Ambulance,
sailed 4 June SS A? cunins? (name illegible)
8 Geelong boys on that boat, only he returned.
Served in Gallipoli (evacuated 2 days before the troops), Egypt, France.
mentioned in dispatches for bravery by General Birdwood (then Sgt Major).
2 weeks after Armistice signed on as student at Royal Dental Hospital London
3 years studying dentistry in England
v. successful, won several scholarships
Presented with diploma by Mrs Lloyd George
Swam for London Universiry & won - earned his "blue" (son John has it)
