He was a haberdasher, who worked for a number of stores including Bright & Hitchcock's in Geelong (in the linen departmens) before owning his own shop in Geelong, where he lived most of his life. Originally a Presbyterian, he was known locally as "Gentle Jesus" after joining the Plymouth Brethren, in which his sister Nell followed him.
He was a keen swimmer who loved the surf - many holidays were spent down at Torquay.
